top 5: met ball 2010

May 7, 2010

the met ball is an annual event held to benefit the metropolitan museum’s costume institute. each year, the met’s costume institute holds a gala in conjunction with various sponsors and publishing megahouse conde nast to launch an exhibit. this year the exhibition’s theme was american woman: fashionising a national identity and members of the fashion (and holllyyywood) fraternity came together with their best representations of american fashion.

the met ball is widely regarded as one of the most important fashion events of the year; it is a place to be seen, to make your mark.

this year, most celebrity attendees walked the red carpet wearing custom creations by american designing icons.  there were definitely some dresses that had me scratching my head asking ‘what the eff was she THINKING?!’ for example miss tina fey:

drop crotch jumper - not the most flattering of looks

but again, i guess the point is to make a statement with your ensemble.

here are my top 5 from the met ball 2010:

jennifer lopez in a strapless gray-taupe zuhair murad ballgown. this is how you work tulle sista-friends!

ruffles done right

melissa george wasn’t the most famous face on the red carpet but her dress is one of the most memorable. her ruffled jmendel dress is a shade of mustard which is impossible to pull off, but she dazzles. i love that her hair is styled to stay on one side, letting the focus fall on the shoulder detail of her dress.

easy, breeeeezy

sjp wears a blush heritage halston (what else???) gown which perfectly sets off her tan skin. and look at her glossy curls *dreamy sigh* this look is perfect,  not too much not too little. love.

ying and yang

how beautiful do you have to be to make such simple dresses work? i love this picture: american simplicity at its best.  both zoe and diane are in calvin klien, the epitome of minimal american design. their dresses are sleek, flattering and drawing attention to the right place – those gorgeous faces. well done girls.

anyone who knows me knows that i love bling, so it’s really no surprise that i went all shrieky excited when i saw nicole richie’s uber-shiny marc jacobs dress. for such a petite girl, she makes maxi dresses work so well. and she is so much better off as a brunette, stunning.

[…] the back of this dress is quite daring, with a cut-out panel that leaves little to the imagination. isn’t it insane that a 38 year old is able to pull this off (body-wise)? ridic. personally, i am not too crazy about this dress. the lacey-up crap in the back makes it look like something a stripper would wear. i think a simple white sheath with an insanely low-cut back, or even no low back, would have been so much classier. something similar to diane kruger’s met ball look.
