Obsession du Jour: Sunday Magazine’s Muse

April 19, 2014

Sunday Magazine Muse

As you guys know the new Sunday Magazine look has captured my heart. I absolutely love the new look and even more than the covers, my absolute favorite feature is the Who’s Your Muse section. What is it all about, you ask? The feature showcases designers and their muses – pretty simple right? What really elevates this to a different level, for me, is the photography. Such BEAUTIFUL images shot by the one and only Faisal Farooqi.

I had a chance to chit chat with Shehrbano Taseer about the feature and its conception, and the story behind those stunningly gorgeous images. Read on and see some of my favorite Muse features.

How did you come up with the feature? The Muse section snowballed into what it is! We initially thought we could do it as a feature in our New Years issue – feature six people and their muse’s, but something went wrong and we couldn’t do it that way, so we did one – Mahgul Rashid and Ayesha Noon – and thought we would feature the rest slowly and space it out, but it was such a huge hit and we got such fantastic feedback, that we decided to make it into a weekly feature. It’s been great fun working with new people every week, getting to talk to them about their work and featuring them in our magazine.

The photoshoots accompanying the Muse article are exquisite – who conceptualizes them (designer or editors?) The beauty of the shots all winds down to Faisal Farooqui’s fabulous vision and eye for detail. He is our official Lahore photographer for the Muse feature, although occasionally we do ask other photographers in Lahore and Karachi to partake – we have had the pleasure of working with Khawar Riaz, Maram and Aabroo, Adeela Badshah and Rizwan Baig too. Faisal and I work really well together. We make a great team. He has been associated with Sunday forever – he photographed our first ever Sunday covers, twelve years ago, long before I joined my mother at Sunday! I tell him my mood for the feature and what I’m thinking, and he makes it come alive. We never use moodboards or reference shots. We like to work with each person individually so their personality and work and individuality shines through. We also give the people who are featuring leaveway to choose where they would like to be photographed and what they want to wear etc and discuss that beforehad, as the shots are all about them and capturing their chemistry with their respective muse’s. It’s been a lot of fun to do the shoots, and a great learning experience. Every single shoot is a joint venture between all those involved and featured.
