on my never-ending quest to find things interesting and new, i stumbled upon the names of two indian jewelery designers who are as far from the cookie-cutter subcontinental aesthetic as mel gibson is from sanity.
annaika’s jewelry is insaaaane. ok seriously, THIS is what i call statement pieces. her necklaces have a unique contemporary tribal feel to them. they are definitely meant to be focal points of any outfit, and they are definitely for a girl with a very bold sense of style.
i was reading up on suhani and she is such an accomplished jewelery designer. i had no clue. she has shown at miami fashion week and her work has been commissioned by the museum of arts and design in nyc. her designs are a bit more toned down than annaika’s, a more polished version of the modern ethnic look we spoke of earlier. you will see a lot of textured metal, gemstones and kundan for that special subcontinental touch. my favorite pieces are from her latest collection; she takes traditional jhumka’s and ghungroo’s and creates neckpieces and cuffs out of them. genius!
