Guys, I’m a simple person and I enjoy simple pleasures. And for me there is no greater pleasure than food, and snacking…especially snacking. One of my favorite things to do, in recent years, is putting together a simple cheese plate and enjoying a solo girls night in with my fave TV shows (lately it’s been the Bold Type and ALWAYS Grace & Frankie).
I’m no cheese connoisseur, I can hardly tell the difference between Gouda and Emmental but I’m learning.
So what do you need for a cheese board? Tradition dictates that you put together a combination of contrasting cheeses: soft, hard, strong, mild, smelly, not so smelly. When I’m doing a cheese board for friends/company, I like to add variety. But if it’s just me, I choose the ones I like best and stick to 3-4 types.
I’m pretty basic in the sense that my fave cheese is a good ole Camembert. And doesn’t have to be a fancy variety either, I just picked this one up at the supermarche. Guys, if you want a life changing experience please pop this into the oven for 10 mins and enjoy the resulting melty goodness.
The other cheeses I like are Moliterno al Tartufo, which is a hard cheese with black truffle, and a sharp cheddar. I picked up this one that had sun-dried tomatoes and spring onions. YUM.
I would also add a Wensleydale with cranberries which is my ultimate guilty pleasure but I thought this was enough cheese for one sitting. Non?
The possibilities of accompaniments to the cheese are endless. Most people prefer to add charcuterie which I’m not a huge fan of, but I threw some pepperoni slices on there for variety. Crackers are a must, I like different types to accompany the cheese flavors, here I went for a simple rye cracker and a more robust salted one. I also like bread with a baked camembert but let’s not go overboard shall we. You should definitely add some fruits and nuts, a bit of crunch (I like chips) and a fruit/chutney for a kick. I used caramelised onion chutney from Marks & Spencer for the first time and I quite liked it.
Alright, that’s my take on a simple cheeseboard, what do you guys think?
